TFA Introduces A New Schedule for WSD Motions

This morning, TFA president Nathanial Council sent out an email to TFA member coaches on behalf of World Schools Committee Chair Courtney Coffman. There are two major changes coming to World Schools motion drops:

  1. There will be no new motions this semester. December will use the motions we had from August-November.

  2. Assuming the amendment passes, four motions will be released December 1st for January-February. Four more motions will be released on February 1st for TFA State.

The hope is that this will reduce the prep burdens for schools moving forward. If you’d like to read the full email from Committee Chair Courtney Coffman (as well as her call for motions), you can find it posted below.

Hi World Schools Coaches,

If you were at Convention, you know the WS Committee submitted an amendment to change the way we release World Schools Motions for students--we found that our current practice created a very difficult prep burden.

We were not able to vote on the amendment, but plan to do so at our November 15th meeting. Fortunately, the EC has approved an initiative to allow us to try out our new scaffolding model for the time being due to the overlap of dates (typically we release topics on November 1st, but our amendment will shift away from that model).

For the month of December, tournaments should use any of the motions released on August 1st for their tournaments (https://www.txfa.org/_files/ugd/a3a5e9_c2131058a9c34ee5976e3215ebd34105.pdf). As always, they should post which motions they are using for specific rounds on their tournament tabroom page.

If our amendment is passed, we will release four motions on December 1st for tournaments to use in the months of January and February. We will then release four motions on February 1st for TFA State. Next year, we will begin a similar scaffold to help reduce prep burdens for students.

If you have any questions about the initiative or our amendment, please feel free to reach out to me or the EC. Additionally, we would still love to have more motion ideas for the January-February motions. You can add your ideas here: https://forms.gle/XzZKJAfRepZfxQXu5. The form will stay open through November 10th.

Thanks!

Courtney Coffman
